Weaving a tapestry of tradition and innovation, the Whitney Vagabond 'Grande Bouche' is an original creation with a classic soul. This Gypsy Jazz guitar, a stylish fusion of Selmer-Maccaferri's legacy, boasts a 14-fret connection and a 670mm scale, a bespoke blueprint for the modern swing player.

A VERSATILE SWING GUITAR

Staying true to form with traditional build techniques, my Modèle Vagabond, Grande Bouche Gypsy Jazz Guitar features structured back and sides for improved tonality and overall strength. The soundboard features a real ‘pliage’ or fold just behind the bridge. Coupled to a longer scale length, this reimagining of Selmer's classic design producing more punch, volume and quicker attack.

MODÈLE VAGABOND

The Modèle Vagabond represents my personal vision of the Selmer-Maccaferri 'Grande Bouche' Gypsy Jazz guitar, offering players a choice between two distinct configurations.

The 670mm long scale version, featuring a 14-fret neck joint, is designed to provide enhanced fret access and exceptional versatility. This model skillfully balances the characteristic roundness of the 12-fret Maccaferri design with a contemporary playability that caters equally to both lead and rhythm styles. Alternatively, players can opt for the 640mm short scale version, featuring a 12-fret connection, which offers a reduced string tension, resulting in a notably lighter perceived action stiffness, a feature favoured by some players.

The long scale Vagabond, crafted with five braces to manage the increased string tension, delivers the sought-after "punchy treble" reminiscent of oval-hole guitars, while simultaneously achieving a remarkably balanced mid and low range. This rich tonal depth is further amplified by the inclusion of a large D-shaped sound hole, enhancing the instrument's overall projection.

Ultimately, the Modèle Vagabond's inherent versatility is undeniable, readily adapting to the nuances of both rhythm and lead playing styles, a testament to its design and a feature consistently praised by players across all skill levels.

Structured Back & Sides

Gypsy guitars feature three veneer layers on the back and sides, each sanded to specific thickness before bonding together in a mold at Whitney Guitars. This traditional Selmer building process produces lightweight, durable, and fine-tuned backs and sides.

Whitney Guitars Setup & Playability

The Gypsy jazz guitar enhances volume and projection with slightly elevated string action. Whitney Gypsy bridges are designed and calibrated for each guitar, with the string action set to 2.25mm (Low E-string adjusted to +0.5mm) and intonation set for Savarez Argentine 011-046 strings, unless otherwise specified.

Whitney Neck Profile

The Whitney-neck profile of our Gypsy guitars offers enhanced comfort and ease of play, maintaining the classic Selmer measurements and 20-inch radius. The neck design, fret ends, and fretboard rounding are meticulously crafted with a focus on detail. Each model also features a modern scarf-joint for improved headstock strength.

Truss Rods & Carbon Fibre Neck Reinforcement:

The essential function of a neck is to provide stability. It must exhibit the required stiffness and maintain its dimensions when faced with variations in temperature and humidity. For this reason, I reinforce every neck with carbon fibre.

Its robust, thicker brass construction and enhanced coating ensure a lifetime of performance and enhanced sound.

NECK OPTIONS

Neck woods in acoustic guitars are vital for both playability and tone. Mahogany delivers warmth and midrange focus, while maple adds brightness and clarity. Stability, determined by wood density and grain, ensures proper intonation. Though less common, woods like cedar or walnut offer unique tones. Ultimately, neck wood influences resonance, sustain, and how vibrations transfer, impacting the guitar's overall feel.
